But then last night, our amazing new sleep schedule went bye-bye!
Caleb hit a growth spurt. Oh dear, Oh my, Oh me, Oh why!
Last night he went to bed at 10:00. Perfect, right?
It was... until he woke up at 10:30.
Micah went upstairs, patted him back to sleep, and came back downstairs. I wanted to go to bed early, so I headed up at 11, praying that I wouldn't wake him back up as I got into bed. Thankfully, he stayed asleep... until 11:45, when he woke up starving! I fed him and tried to get him to go back to sleep, but he wasn't going without a fight! So tired and needing sleep for work the next day, I called Micah about 12-something, asking if he would walk Caleb around. But as soon as Micah walked into the room, Caleb fell asleep. Go figure?
We thought that was the end of the night's antics, but nope. There was still more to come. 3:30, 4:30, 5:45, 6:30... on and off throughout the rest of the night, Caleb would wake up, fuss, and just flat out refuse to sleep. He wanted to be held. He didn't want anyone to touch him. He was hungry. He never wanted to eat ever again. Gracious, child, just make up your mind! At one point during the night, Micah had to actually pick Caleb up and walk around with him in an attempt to lull him back to sleep, something we haven't had to do since those first weeks.
Meanwhile, I was so tired, especially knowing that I had to wake up at 6:00 in order to get ready for work. Micah's pretty amazing in the fact that he knows that I have to work, while he can stay home and nap when Caleb naps, so as long as I take care of the feedings, then he'll doing any middle-of-the-night changings or soothings necessary. He's great like that.
When Caleb woke up at the 4:30 mark, Micah walked around with him, then gave him back to me to feed, and when he was still fussy after that, I pulled out my hidden ace and laid him on top of my chest, wrapping my arms around him. I find that this method really helps when Caleb is either too tired to actually sleep or is having trouble falling asleep. By wrapping my arms around him, I keep him from kicking his arms and legs out, something he does when he's fussy (which usually wakes him up without fail), thereby allowing him to calm down enough to sleep. On top of that, the rhythmic sound of my heartbeat and breathing helps lull him to sleep. That little trick hasn't failed me yet! And last night was no different. That hour and a half from 4:30-6:00 was the best sleep we had all night.
At least until my alarm went off.
And I dropped my phone.
With the alarm still going off.
And I couldn't find the phone.
And when I did find it, I dropped it.
Then I couldn't find it or reach it.
And did I mention that I still had Caleb on my chest this whole time?
I woke up Micah and he reached over to get Caleb, allowing my tired body to get ready for work.
And yes, I'm still tired.
And no, I didn't have coffee.
