Don't panic if you feel electric buzzes down your legs. Baby has simply stumbled on yet another way to grab your attention -- this time, he's bumping against nerves in your pelvis.
Baby is the size of a Leek!
Your baby has really plumped up. He weighs about 6.8 pounds and he's over 19 1/2 inches long (like a leek). He has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold his hand for the first time! His organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb. Wondering what color your baby's eyes will be? If he's born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If he's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time he's 9 months old.
I spent most of the morning today talking to Mom about last minute baby items and advice for the million and one questions running through my head. I know from reading the mommy message boards that a lot of women find this time to be highly frustrating, especially when it comes to moms, mother-in-laws, and grandmothers.. basically, all the women that we know. Sitting down, I'll read post after post expressing how aggravated they are at the pushiness, know-it-all-ness, and outright disregard for their own feelings.
I read all that and look back at the women that God has placed in my life and can't help but offer one prayer of thanks after another.
He's given me my mom... she has become my best friend in ways that I can't even imagine. Throughout this entire journey through being a new wife, and now, a mother-to-be, she has been there whenever I needed a comforting word, a bit of advice, or someone to share my joys with. She has been unfailing in her support, unending in her devotion, unrelenting in her love. Yet, she also understands when I need my own space, or need to make my own mistakes, or simply need someone to listen without talking back or trying to "correct" every little thing. That has been one of the greatest gifts that she has given me. Needless to say, I love my Momma.. and she is the best. period.
And he's given me Momma Peter (ie. Micah's mom). This woman has raised more children than anyone I know and has the most generous heart that I've ever seen. She thinks nothing of sacrificing for the good of one of her children, whether they be from her womb or a foster child just passing through, they are still loved in abundance. Already, Micah and I have seen that outpouring of love for our own little one, and I know that Momma Peter will do everything she can to make sure that Baby knows two things: He is loved by Grandma, and by Jesus.
Grandma Shaw, who first response after we told her about the baby was to declare that she was coming up to be here when he comes! Yes.. my 60-something year old grandma is coming to Alaska. With her being so far away, the only time we really get to see each other is at the Assembly, and neither Micah nor I have been able to go, what with school and work and finances. But that hasn't stopped her from being involved in her own way. One of the sweetest gestures is when Grandma sent a CD of Christian hymns and songs made into lullabies. She had read that babies can hear inside the womb, and what they hear helps shape their personalities and sticks with them, even through later life. What better way to start off than hearing "Jesus loves me, this I know." As I played the music to Baby, I couldn't help but smile...
Granny... just.. Granny. She needs no other name. In every email, letter, phone conversation that I've had with Granny, she has made sure to tell me of the love that she has for me and Micah, and for this little life that God has give us. Through all these months, I know that her prayers have been unending on our behalf, and that she can't wait to hold this little one come Christmastime. All the little great-grandchildren have a special place on Granny's lap, and in her heart. Growing up, I remember loving to go to Granny and Papa's house because it was always so much fun! Granny made life fun. I want to be able to share that with my children, to make every day an adventure and a blessing.
My heart is full of thankfulness for these Women of God, these examples of motherhood. I'm so thankful knowing that I have such sources of love and prayers that I can turn to in my times of joy and sorrow. And since I haven't been this way before, I'm ready for any advice that they care to share, the more the better! All I know is, Mom raised my brothers and I, Grandma raised Dad, Momma Peter raised Micah, and Granny raised Mom... I say those are some pretty good credentials.
So thank you.. each of you.. for being a part of my life. I love you all.
